Using PSP8:
Iris - #1.
1. Working with Adjust || Sharpness || Unsharp Mask.
The Unsharp Mask is really not well named as it is a tool/effect that will sharpen images in a very controlled fashion which makes it a very useful tool. It has three parameters which control the sharpening effect. The Radius sets the number of pixels that will be sharpened. The strength controls the sharpness and the Clipping controls the blur.
The difference between the Unsharp Mask and Sharpen is that Sharpen effects the whole photograph while Unmask effects just the pixels usually in the object and its edges.
It is best to use very low values for Radius, usually 1 or 2. For strength usually around 200, though I have used values from 50 to 300. Clipping is a way to soften the effect and blurs in subtle ways.
Experiment with this effect and you will find a quick and nice way to sharpen photographs, often sharpening the outlines. Start with low values: Radius = 1, Strength = 100 or 200, Clipping = 0).
In the illustration, I again used the Iris with the background removed. Though the presentation may not clearly illustrate the effect, the Iris is sharpened at its edges and the veins of the leaves are accentuated. Also, notice I did not lighten the Iris, just sharpened it.
The values I used:
- Radius: 2
- Strength: 200
- Clipping: 0
