Glass Bowl

Download this tutorial Glassbowl (25kb)

Please download the Glass Bowl zip file where you will find all the selections necessary to complete the glass bowl. Place them in your selections directory.

If you do not have a selections directory under C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7 (if C is where you have installed your PSP), then just create a new folder in this location and name it "selections". Unzip all the files in the bowl zip to that location.

Begin by creating a new image 400 x 400 pixel, with a black background. You need a dark background in order to see your design as it develops. Set your foreground color to fading background gradient and background color to white.  If you are using PSP V6, set foreground to black and background to white.

In PSP V6, you will use your fill tool (bucket) with the following settings:

  • Style:  Sunburst Gradient
  • Blend Mode:  normal
  • Paper texture:  none
  • Match mode:  RGB value
  • Tolerance:  200
  • Opacity:  100
  • Sample merged: either setting

Click on the second tab in the tool options palette to access the settings for the gradient and continue to use the settings as given throughout the tutorial:

  • Gradient = Fading Background
  • Repeats = 0
  • Horizontal = 50
  • Vertical = 50

Add a new layer.

Load the first selection by going to Selections || Load from Disk and locate the file called "base.sel".

Then press the [OK] button, then fill this selection with the gradient.

Load the next selection - "lft_base_hilit.sel" selection.

Click on the gradient style and change the settings to:

  • Horizontal = 18
  • Vertical = 50

Then press OK button, and fill your selection with the gradient.

Load the next selection, "rt_base_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 90
  • Vertical = 50

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient.

Load the next selection, "stem.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 50
  • Vertical = 60

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient.

Load the next selection, "lft_stem_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 18
  • Vertical = 50

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient.

Load the next selection, "rt_stem_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 90
  • Vertical = 50

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient. At this point your image should appear as the one on the left.

Load the next selection, "bowl.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 50
  • Vertical = 80

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient TWICE.

Load the next selection, "rt_bowl_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 80
  • Vertical = 50

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient TWICE

Load the next selection, "lft_bowl_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 20
  • Vertical = 50

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient TWICE

Load the next selection, "lower_bowl_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 50
  • Vertical = 20

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient TWICE

Load the next selection, "backrim.sel".

Leave the gradient settings as they are, and fill the selection with the gradient TWICE

Load the next selection, "left_inner_hilit.sel".

Click on the gradient style to change the gradient as follows:

  • Horizontal = 80
  • Vertical = 30

Then press the [OK] button, and fill this selection with the gradient

Load the next selection, "opening.sel".

You now have a complete glass bowl. If you change your background color, you will see that your bowl is transparent as it picks up any of the colors of the background.
