This is a simple way to make a grid.

A simple way to make a grid ...
Open a new image 25x25 pixels, background = white.
This will depend on what size your tile will be. For larger tiles, create a larger image. For smaller tiles create a smaller image.

Zoom in on your image to see more clearly.

Select your Paintbrush tool:
Shape = Square
Size = 1
Hardness = 100
Opacity = 100
Step = 1
Density = 100

Set your foreground style to Solid Color (click on the arrow in the foreground style box and choose the icon on the left) and your foreground texture to None (click on the arrow in the foreground texture box and choose the icon on the right). Click into the foreground style box and choose your foreground color. For this tutorial, we chose green: Red = 0, Green = 192, Blue = 0.

Draw a one pixel line on the left of the image – from 0,0 to 0,25.

Draw another line on top, from 0,0 to 25,0.

Open a new image 100x100 pixels.
Again, this can be any size you wish.

Select the Flood Fill tool:
Blend mode = Normal
Match mode = None
Tolerance = n/a
Opacity = 100

Set your foreground style to Pattern (click on the arrow in your foreground style box and choose the second icon from the right) and your foreground texture to None. Click into your foreground style box and choose your grid image from the Pattern drop-down box (Scale = 100, Angle = 0).

Click into your 100x100 image to fill it with the pattern –

And you have a grid!

To make a double-barrelled grid, activate your 25x25 image and duplicate this image by going to Window || Duplicate (Shift+D).

Select your Paintbrush tool, make sure that your foreground style is still set to Solid Color for the Paintbrush tool.
Draw a line from 25,0 to 25,25.
Draw another line from 0,25 to 25,25.

Open a new image 100x100 pixels.
Again, this can be any size you wish.

Select the Flood Fill tool, leave all the settings as are.

Make sure your foreground style is still set to Pattern for the Flood Fill tool; click into your foreground style box and choose your new grid image from the Pattern drop-down box.

Click into your 100x100 image to fill it with the pattern –

And you have a double-barrelled grid!
