Finished Quilted Penguin Quilt

This is my first try at digital quiltmaking. With practice I feel sure the images will greatly approve, as will yours. ;o) I've mainly done this tutorial to give the basic idea and hope you'll take it from there and expound on the techniques.

If you'd like to find some fabrics to use in your quilt, here is a start

To successfully complete this tut, you will need the Texturizer Filter

To be able to use this filter, you should create a Texture Folder in PSP5 so all your .psd files will be together. When you find images you like, you need to re-save them as a .psd file in your texture folder. I know .bmp & .tif files can be re-saved. I'm not sure about any others. You'll have to experiment on your own. You may find you need to reduce the size of the image.

Background Flood Filled with Pattern
  • Create a new image Create New Image
Width = 400 Height = 400  Background = White Image Type = 16 Million colors I've started large enabling me to see details better. Later you can resize your image.

  • Add a new layer, Name it bkgd
  • Flood fill Flood Fill Tool with pattern you'd like
  • The only setting that matters is the opacity.
I used 50
  • I also rotated this layer so it would look better
  • (I did this on a new layer so I could easily change it at another time.)

    co-ordinates

    co-ordinates-->penguin body

    Color Palette

    • In your color palette:
    • Set Foreground color brown
    R = 112, G = 76, B = 70
  • Background color yellow
  • R = 252, G = 252, B = 214
    • Create a new layer, Name it penguin body (my screen captures will show bear body instead of penguin)
    • Women's Perrogative, you know! ;o)
    • Using the Selection Tool: Selection Tool
    Selection Type = ellipse  Feather = 2 for smoother edges Antialias = checked Begin at co-ordinates [200,250] drag cursor out to [110,150]
    The co-ordinates need not be exact, they are just a guideline.

    • Flood Fill with brown
    Match mode = n/a Tolerance = n/a Opacity = 100 Deselect You could also fill with fabric (pattern fill), if desired.
    We will texturize later.

    Dragging line upward--Dragging line nearer end to shape arm
    drag line upward -- drag again nearer the end to shape
    Shows curvature of top portion of arm
    curvature of top portion of arm
    penguin body hidden showing complete arm
    Line drawn so ends meet & shaped
    • Create a new layer, Name it left arm
    • Using Line Tool: Line Tool
    Line Type = Bezier Width = 1 Antialias = checked
  • Draw line from coordinates

  • [180,165] to [30,235]
  • Using mouse close to lower end drag line upward, and drag again nearer the end to shape.
  • Hide penguin body layer and draw line so both ends meets previous line.

  • Using mouse, shape line as you would like the arm to look. You may have to zoom in to see what you are doing. Remember if you don't like the way it looks you can undo.

    Using deformation tool to shape and place arm
    • Flood Fill twice in arm selection just drawn
    Fill Style = Solid Color Match mode = RGB Value Tolerance = 200 Opacity = 100
  • Click on Layer Visibilty Toggle Layer Visibility Toggle

  • to make penguin body layer visible again.
  • Using the deformation tool Deformation Tool
  • Move & shape arm the way you want it to look. Don't worry that it overlaps the body, we will take care of that in a bit.

    Magic Wand selecting penguin body
  • Make penguin body active layer
  • Using magic wand
  • Select penguin body
  • Magic Wand Settings:
  • Match Mode = RGB Mode
    Feather = 0
    Tolerance = 0
  • If complete body isn't selected, you may need to increase the tolerance
  • Selections || Modify || Contract = 3
  •
    Erasing a portion of penguin's arm that is covering the body
    • Activate left arm layer
    • Using the eraser tool
    • Eraser settings:
    Paper texture = none  Shape = round  Size =20  Opacity = 100 Density = 100  Hardness & Step = n/a
  • Lower the opacity of penguin body layer
  • This enables you to see the portion of the arm that is on the body (particularly useful if you've used a different pattern)
    Erase the portion of the arm that is covering the body. Having selected the penguin body you need not be careful erasing as it will only erase in the selected area. This procedure will leave a slight line to give the impression of a body separation.

    Follow the same procedure to make the other arm, making sure to create a new layer. I named mine right arm.

  • You may need to increase tolerance if the whole head is not selected
    • Selections || Modify || Contract = 3

    (It may help to lower the opacity of head layer enabling you to see where you need to erase.)

  • Using magic wand, same settings as before
  • Select inner body and Texturize if you wish.
  • Deselect
  • If you desire you can also texturize the bkgd layer (I didn't for my quilt).

  • Move into place

  •

    If you want to move the feet all together: Merge both feet layers and you can move them using the mover tool or deform them using the deformation tool. If you wish to move the complete penguin, hide the bkgd & background, Merge visible layers

  •
    Finished Quilt
    Repeat procedure to create the outer layer, but Increase the canvas size to 600

    There you have your very own quilt to keep you warm this winter! ;o) Leave it full size or resize if you like.

    When I've resized, I've used Bilinear Resample and Unsharp Mask to my liking. HTH
