Original: This is a photo of the fall trees across a small pond at a place I go to often to let faithful dog Indy run.
Buzzed: First I applied the Simplfy 1 effect with a setting of 19 to both light and dark areas. Then I adjusted the Brightness and Contrast by 32 and 29 respectively. Finally I used the Unsharp Mask with settings of Contrast/6, Radius/1, and Threshold/57.
Original: Here's faithful dog taking a flying leap into the creek that feeds that pond in the earlier picture.
Buzzed: I first applied the Simplifier 2 filter with Remove Large set to 67 and Add Back Small to 2 on both light and dark. Then I adjusted the Brightness and Contrast to 15 and 12 respectively. I then made a duplicate layer, applied edge color to that and again adjusted Brightnes and Contrast on that layer by 45 and 12. I then merged the layers by multiplying them, then flattened the image and finally adjusted PSP's Highlight, Midtones and Shadows to 71/15/32.
 
Detail: Close-up of a section shows how the detail has been simplified without loss of edges or clarity of color, giving a very painterly look to the image.
