Pot of Gold Pt 2 - Creating the Shamrock
Created by: the Prof

This tutorial works with Tubes & the Deformation Tool and is part of a series which creates the various images that will be used in the On-Line Tutorial for Creating a Pot Of Gold, a St. Patrick's Day Card.

The tutorials are:

  • The Rainbow: (Describes Gradients, Creates a Rainbow Gradient and Tube File.)
  • The Shamrock: (Using Circles and Shading Effects)
  • The Pot: (Using the Weave & Sculpture Effects with shading.)
  • The Pot of Gold: (on-line class tutorial) - The St. Patrick's Card

In this tutorial, we will create a Shamrock primarily using circles and shading. The final image (a PSP file) will be used in the On-Line Tutorial and we will also make a Tube of this image.

(This tutorial is written for PSP v.7 although many features are available also in PSP v.6.)

The Shamrock

  • Set Styles Color Boxes = Solid (Paint Brush)
  • Set Foreground = Lime (227,255,227)
  • Set Background = Black (0,0,0)
  • Create a New Canvas 200 x 200 pixels Background 16 M Colors

Note: The Background Color is used only to see the Shamrock better as it is developed. We will start drawing the shamrock by creating a circle and then duplicating it until we have a basic shamrock image.

Create the Shamrock

  • Create a New Layer
  • Use Selection Tool, Type = Circle, and draw a circle about 1/4 inch in diameter
  • Flood Fill Selection with the Lime Green Background
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]
  • Copy [Control]+ [C]
  • Paste as a New Layer [Control]+[L]
  • Use Mover Tool and move new circle to right of original just touching the sides.
  • Paste as a New Layer again [Control]+[L]
  • Use Mover Tool and move new circle to bottom middle of the two touching circles. There will be a black area in the center.
  • Turn Off the Background Layer, and make sure one of the other layers is highlighted
  • Use: Layers || Merge || Visible
  • Turn On the Background Layer.

We now have one leaf of the Shamrock. We will copy this image and paste it as a new layer twice to complete the shape of the Shamrock. You may need to use the Mover Tool and position each image so once done all three touching circles are visible:

  • Copy Merged Layer (Control + C)
  • Paste as a New Layer (Control + L)
  • Use Mover tool on new image and move to the left of the original leaving just a tad of black showing though on the to left circles. Have the bottom circle of original image and right circle of new image covering each other.
  • Paste as a New Layer (Control + L) and again use mover tool and move new image to the right of the other two making a clover leaf appearance.
  • Using the Mover Tool adjust the three images to your liking with some black area between each part of the three circles.

At this point you have six green circles around the edge, a circle in the middle with a star shape in black showing.

Shading of Shamrock

We will first shade the Shamrock. Later we will add fills and a stem.

First, let's label the layers to help keep everything clearer:

  • Start with Top Layer.
  • Turn it off to determine which leaf and then turn it back on.
  • Label it (Top, Left, or Right dependent upon which leaf) by double clicking on the layer.
  • Repeat this process for each other Layer.

Next shade each leaf:

  • Highlight a Layer.
  • Use the Magic Wand and click outside of leaf (in Black area)
  • Use: Selections || Invert
  • Create a New Layer
  • Highlight the New Layer
  • Use: Effects || 3D Effects || Cutout:
    • Vertical and Horizontal Offset = 0
    • Opacity = 100
    • Blur = 40
    • Shadow Color = Green (0, 128, 0)
    • Fill Interior with Color = Unchecked
    • Click on Ok
  • Do not worry if the middle section of leaf does not shade.
  • Shade each of the three layers following the above steps.
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]
  • Turn Off the Background Layer
  • Highlight one of top layers
  • Use: Layers || Merge Visible
  • Turn On Background Layer

Eliminate Black in Center

  • Eliminate the Black area in center of Image:
    • Highlight the Merged Layer
    • Use the Magic Wand and click outside of leaf (in Black area)
    • Use: Selections || Invert
    • Highlight the Background Layer
    • Create a New Layer and label it 'Leaf BG'
    • Use Flood Fill and fill selection with Lime. (Foreground Color)
  • Duplicate this Layer (Right Click on Layer for context menu and select 'Duplicate')
  • Drag this Layer to become the Top Layer
  • Create a New layer
  • Use: Effects || 3D Effects || Cutout with same values
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]
  • Turn off all layers except the top two layers and make sure one of top layers is highlighted
  • Use: Layers || Merge Visible
  • Turn On All layers
  • On the Top Layer, use: Image || Resize:
    • Percentage of Original = Checked
    • Width and Height = 75
    • Resize all Layers = Unchecked
    • Maintain Ratio = Checked
    • Click on OK
  • Use: Effects || Blur || Gaussian Blur with value of 4
  • Turn Off Background Layer and keep a top layer highlighted
  • Use: Layers || Merge Visible
  • Turn On Background Layer

Because of how my image looks, I Rotated it (Image || Rotate || Left with a value of 55 degrees)

Create the Stem

  • Highlight the Background Layer
  • Create a New Layer and Label it 'Stem'
  • Draw a Triangle Selection Taller than Wide at the base of the leaf. Don' Worry if it is not exactly in center at this point.
  • Flood Fill it with Lime
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]
  • Use the Mover Tool and locate Stem in Center of image at its bottom. You may want to overlap the bottom a bit with the top of the stem.
  • Use the Magic Wand and click outside the stem.
  • Use: Selections || Invert
  • Create a New Layer Top
  • Use: Effects || 3D Effects || Cutout changing the Blur Value = 20
  • Click on Ok
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]

The Shamrock is Finished. Just Merge Visible the Top Three Layers:

  • Turn Off the Background Layer keeping one of top layers highlighted
  • Use: Layers || Merge Visible
  • Label the Layer 'Shamrock'

Smoothing the Edges of the Image

Because our edges have some rough spots we will smooth them out with the Gaussian Blur effect.

  • Use Magic Wand and Click outside the image
  • Use: Selections || Modify || Expand with a Value = 2
  • Use: Effects || Blur || Gaussian Blur with a Value = 2
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]

Saving the Image

We will be using a smaller size of this image in the on-line class tutorial. However, for now let's save this image both as a PSP file and as a Tube File.

  • Highlight and Delete the Background Layer leaving a single Layer Image on a Transparent Background. (Right Click on Background Layer for context menu and click on Delete).
  • To both Center Image and reduce its size:
    • Copy it [Control]+[C]
    • Paste it as a New Image [Control]+[V]
  • Save it as a PSP File: File || Save As with name of shamrock.psp
  • Note. This is the image used in the Pot of Gold On-Line Tutorial

To Create a Tube File:

  • Use File || Export || Picture Tube
  • All needed Variables will be set except:
    Tube Name = Shamrock
  • then, Click on OK.
  • Use the Tubes Tool and Select this tube.
