Pot of Gold Pt 3 - Creating the Pot
Created by: the Prof

This tutorial works with Tubes & the Deformation Tool and is part of a series which creates the various images that will be used in the On-Line Tutorial for Creating a Pot Of Gold, a St. Patrick's Day Card.

The tutorials are:

  • The Rainbow: (Describes Gradients, Creates a Rainbow Gradient and Tube File.)
  • The Shamrock: (Using Circles and Shading Effects)
  • The Pot -- this tutorial: (Using the Weave & Sculpture Effects with shading.)
  • The Pot of Gold: (on-line class tutorial) - The St. Patrick's Card

In this tutorial, we will create the Pot which will be used in the On-Line Tutorial. We will also make a Tube of this image. The techniques used in this tutorial include using the Weave Effect, Punch, Sculpture and the Cutout Effect to shade the pot.

(This tutorial is written for PSP v.7 although many features are available also in PSP v.6.)

Create the Pot

We will create a Green Pot using the Weave Effect. To first give it dimension after creating the circle with the texture, we will 'Punch' it and then shade it.

  • Create a New Canvas, 200 x 200 Transparent,
    16M colors
  • Use Selection Tool:
    • Type = Circle
    • Feather = 0
    • Antialias= Checked
  • Draw a Circle about the size of a quarter in the middle of canvas
  • Do Not Deselect
  • Flood Fill with a Lime Green Color (227,255,227)
  • Use Effects || Texture Effect || Weave:
    • Gap Size = 1
    • Width = 6
    • Opacity = 100
    • Weave Color = Dark Green (0,64,0)
    • Gap Color = Green (0,128,0)
    • Fill Gaps = Checked
    • Click on OK
  • Use Effects || Geometric Effect || Punch
    with a value = 50%
  • Create a New Layer
  • Use Effects || 3D Effect || Cutout
    • Vertical = 0
    • Horizontal = 0
    • Opacity = 100
    • Blur = 60
    • Shadow Color = Green (0,128,0)
    • Click on OK
  • Deselect (Control + D)
  • Use Layers || Merge || Visible
  • To Center Image use Copy (Control + C)
  • And, then Paste as New Layer (Control + L)
  • Label this Layer 'Pot'
  • Delete the other Layer

Give the Pot a Rim

  • Create a New Layer and Label it 'Rim'
  • Use the Selection Tool, Style = Ellipse
  • Start with coordinates 100,70 and draw the ellipse to cover the top of the circle image
  • Flood Fill with the Lime Green Background color
  • Use Selections || Modify || Contract with a value of 10
  • Use the Delete Key
  • Deselect (Control + D)
  • If Necessary, Use the Mover Tool and move Rim to cover any weave that shows at top of pot.
  • Use Effects || Texture Effect || Texture and select the Terrain Preset
  • Use Effects || Texture Effect || Sculpture and select the Gold Preset

Give Rim a Shadow

  • Highlight the Rim Layer
  • Use Magic Wand and click outside of rim
  • Use Selections || Modify || Expand with value = 1
  • Use Selections || Invert
  • Create a New Layer and Label it 'Rim Shadow'
  • Drag it below the Rim Layer
  • Use Effects || 3D Effect || Drop Shadow
    • Vertical = 4
    • Horizontal = 1
    • Opacity = 70
    • Blur = 6
    • Color = Black
    • Click on OK
  • Do Not Deselect
  • Create a new Layer above the Ring Shadow Layer
  • Label this layer 'Inside Rim'
  • Flood Fill with the Lime Green Background Color

    • Vertical = 19
    • Horizontal = 14
    • Opacity = 90
    • Blur = 60
    • Shadow Color = Dark Green (0,64,0)
    • Fill Interior Color = Checked
    • Interior color = Lime (227,255,227)
    • Click on Ok
  • Deselect [Control]+[D]
  • Use Layers || Merge || Visible
  • Label it 'Pot'

Saving the Image

Save this image both as a PSP file and as a Tube File. At this point we should have a finished Pot as a single layer on a Transparent Background.

  • Highlight and Delete the Background Layer leaving a single Layer Image on a Transparent Background (right-click on Background Layer for context menu and click on Delete)
  • Save it as a PSP File: File || Save As with name of pot.psp
  • Note. This is the image used in the Pot of Gold On-Line Tutorial

To create a Tube file

  • Use File || Export || Picture Tube
  • All needed Variables will be set except:
    Tube Name = PotofGold
  • then, Click on OK.
  • Use the Tubes Tool and Select this tube.
