The Web Based Control Panel will allow you to manage files on the web site in various ways. In addition to uploading of files, there is a file manager which is one of the key functions. The file manager allows one to navigate to folders, create new folders, navigate to files and manage files including editing them.
The control panel is initially intimidating if one has not ever used one before. However, once becoming familiar with it and how to manage folders and files, it often is more convenient than the FTP program. While the FTP program will be perhaps the most effecient to just upload files to the site, if there are corrections to make it will be easier to use the control panel rather than correcting the files on your computer and then uploading them again with FTP.
ACCESSING the CONTROL PANEL
One uses a web browser and enters a specific URL (which will be provided in the welcome letter). When reaching the Log In page, one enters their log in name and password (also provided in the welcome letter). Then, one will reach the main Control Panel Page.
Click on the image for a full screen view.
USING the CONTROL PANEL
On the left hand side are various categories with brief information. There are three key items to check:
One other item that will be useful is at the bottom left on the initial control panel page. One can click on the Click to View Documentation which provides complete information on using all Cpanel features. Additional help with one's site is also available by emailing the PSPUG support (email to firstname.lastname@example.org with Support entered in the Subject).
- Disk Usage: This item indicates how much web space one has used.
- Disk Space Available: How much space is available of the 50 megabytes allocated.
- Bandwidth Usage: This figure indicates how much transfer or bandwidth has been used in the month of the 500 megabytes available.
The File Manager
The File Manager will be the most primary function used in the Control Panel. Clicking on it will access the root directory.
Click on the folder icon for public_html which takes you to the main folder you will use for your files. Then you will be able to manage your files from this next screen.
Many of the folders that begin with the underscore are not ones needed and just are part of the operating aspects of the site. These folders will not need to be accessed or changed.
The folder 'cgi-bin' is the folder for all cgi files if one uses them. The demosite folder is used only in this demo site example and will not be needed. The images folder is available only in the demo site but can be added to one's own site if wanted in order to have a separate folder for the images referenced in .htm pages.
Clicking on a folder icon, takes one to that folder and its contents. Clicking on the Create New Folder brings up a box on the right where one enters the new Folder name. Clicking on Upload Files brings up a new window where one will browse to the folder on their computer where the files to be uploaded exist and select the file(s) to be uploaded. Clicking on a file (folder) name brings up the menu items for manipulating files.
On the right are the options available and allow one to view the file, delete or edit it, change file permissions, and rename the file. The HTML editor is not available in this package.
As stated earlier, initially in may appear using the control panel is difficult. Actually, taking time to learn its features and how to use the file manager makes maintaining one's site very easy and convenient.
